The book details the study of women in Jamaica in the first 140 years of British colonization. The book is the dissertation of the author which she submitted in 1974 and which has become a classic work in Caribeean historiography. It is based on extensive archival work. The editors of this book have written an informative introduction to the subject and have updated the original bibliography. The author analyzes the role of women of all classes and all colours in Jamaica during slavery. Women are shown as agents of history. The book is divided into three parts: I. The female arrivants, 1655-1770; II. Creole slave society, 1770-1834; III. Postscript, 1834-1844. | |
