This study examines the contributions of three North American authors, Marge Piercy, Cherríe Moraga and Leslie Feinberg, to the discussion of gender and sexual orientation as socially constructed determinants of identity and agents of oppression. Piercy, a Jewish writer from a working-class background dedicates her writing to providing a glimpse into the multifaced lives from various backgrounds in U.S. societey. A strong feminist viewpoint informs Piercy's work, exposing women's status as secondary citizens and portraying the effects of various forms of oppression women and men endure in U.S. society. Moraga, a lesbian Chicana, offers a critique of monolithic definitions of identity in the context of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and class. Moraga strongly supports Third World feminism and has been instrumental in raising awareness about racism, sexism and homophobia by lending her voice to oppressed people of color. Feinberg is a Jewish transgendered butch lesbian who identifies as a "masculine female" to illustrate the apparent contradiction her gender presents in U.S. society. Her fictional and non-fictional writings demonstrate a materialist approach to questions of oppression and challenge the polarized model of gender and sexual oppression that fosters heterocentrism and transgender discrimination. | |
