| Women are the backbone of this society, although all too often they are trapped in ancient cultures and traditions where men play the dictatorial, pivotal role in families. It is often accompanied by physical and sexual abuse. These age-old cultures and the notions associated with them make men invincible and powerful and women powerless, subservient and trapped. This was until a generation of courageous mothers simply no longer wanted to accept the fixed hierarchy that permeated the traditional culture of Vietnam. Out of the love for their children and despite facing great difficulties, they decided to divorce their husbands and embark on new lives as single mothers. The consequences of their actions lead to radical changes in the cultural development of this originally conservative country in which everything is centred around the family. The Berlin based documentary maker Marijn Poels visited a number of single mothers in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi for his latest documentary called By Choice or Chance. In this story by the Dutch producer Peter J de Vries, Poels witnesses the strength of these single mothers, being the first generation who have dared to reject the traditions of this deep rooted culture. | |
