Beschreibung:
In early 2007, the nation’s attention focused on Mexico City: the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District discussed and passed a law decriminalizing abortion, and no sector remained indifferent to the topic. Abortion was everywhere. From the Internet to street flyers, and from Monsiváis to Chespirito, indisputably popular characters of a culture defined by contrasts. The law was passed by a large majority on April 24 and entered into effect two days later. It is important to understand how Mexico City managed to legislate on an issue such as abortion, which implies or creates deep divisions and puts individuals’ essential values at stake. One of the main objectives of this issue of Temas para el debate (Topics for Discussion Collection) is to answer some of the questions raised by the decriminalization of abortion by systematizing, analyzing, and characterizing the process. Additionally, it seeks to identify potential mechanisms to resolve certain ethical questions in the context of an incipient democracy. Table of Contents: 1. Background: Changes in the Status of Abortion in Mexico City Prior to the New Reform 2. A Campaign Promise? Electoral Platforms and Citizen Demands 3. The Mexican Political Context 4. Proposed Reform Bills 5. The Right and Its Reaction 6. Pro-Choice Organizations and Their Allies 7. Political Decisions and Negotiations within the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District 8. The Role of the Media 9. Voting Day - Conclusions and Perspectives - Annex
