| The author in this book - an associate professor of anthropology and African Anerican studies atr Columbia University - shows the influence of globalization on people's lives and livelihoods in the Dominican Republic. Steven Gregory presents the unability of these people to move as they are "fixed" in space by their economic situations and by spatial practices restrincting movement, citizenship rights, and access to a living wage. The book is based on the ethnographic fieldwork that the author did in Boca Chica and Andrés, two towns that are located about thirty kilometers southeast of the capital city. He demonstrates that the transnational flows of capital, culture, and people are mediated by contextually specific power relations, politics, and history. Topics that are being discussed are the informal economy, the making of a telenova, sex tourism, and racism and discrimination against Haitians. All in all is the book a critical account of globalization. | |
