Beschreibung:
The thesis "Two Worlds One Origin" is a research project about Vietnamese women in different countries. The main interest of this paper lies in the juxtaposition of living environments of Vietnamese women in Vietnam and abroad. Taking as a point of departure the different experiences and life situations of Vietnamese women after periods of war, migration and renovation (Doi Moi) women were and still are exposed to Western influences to various degrees. Therefore, one question is: How much Western influence can a Vietnamese woman handle in her own family and does the influence change her life situation and her status of being a woman in terms of her gender role? The second main research question is: How does that change (migration) affect their status and their life situation and how do Vietnamese (refugee) women deal with these changes? Using the method of narrative biographical interviews this paper has a strong qualitative approach with parts of ethno-psychoanalyses undergoing qualitative content analyses for its interpretations. Altogether this paper analysed 54 Interviews conducted in Vietnam and in the area of Lake Constance. The interview group in Vietnam contained 33 interviews with an age range of 18 to 59 and 21 interviews outside Vietnam, mainly at the border triangle of the Lake Constance region (Austria, Germany and Switzerland). The age range from this group was 23 to 54. One of many results of this paper is that the financial independence of women allowed them to influence and change their traditional gender role and family status. On the other side, Vietnamese women living abroad are struggling with similar issues on a different level. Their challenge is to maintain Vietnamese traditions and values in a different society.
