Feminist Teaching Practice in Masculine Higher Education Institutions in Taiwan

Using qualitative research and in-depth interviews, this study attempts to understand how female feminist teachers practice feminist pedagogy in colleges. It adopts the perspectives of multiple masculinities and gender organization to present the systematic and cultural gendering processes in institutions and to explore their effects on feminist teaching practices. The findings of this study show that gender ideology embedded in systems and organizational structure have an indirect but substantial impact on teaching practices of female feminist teachers. A performance-driven management style and emphasis on personal performance did not favor the teaching practices of feminism. These systems and rules of pseudo-equity have suppressed the self-development of female feminist teachers institutionally and systematically. The findings of this study can provide insights to identify the gender ideology and masculine norms that exist in schools and cultural processes, in order to propose potential changes to actualize gender equity and feminist pedagogy.
