Beschreibung:
The Gender Face of Asian Politics covers a wide range of studies on gender and politics, gender and political leadership, impact and forms of female political representation and participation in different Asian countries such as Afghanistan, the Philippines, India, Burma/Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Pakistan. Beyond discussing the success and outcome of regional quota provisions and female public policy-making, international authors, coming from North America, Europe and Asia, investigate women's role and contributions as change agents, female heads of government or state, parliamentarians as well as opposition leaders at different tiers, from the local grassroots to the top echelons of political power. All contributions originate from the third international conference on Women and Politics in Asia , held in Islamabad, Pakistan, in November 2005. They represent an ongoing study effort and transnational discussion among experts, academicians, women politicians and NGO representatives, leaving the reader with a systematic, in-depth and comparative knowledge of the various dynamics, characteristics and challenges of the gender face of Asian politics. I. Cartography of women in Asian politics: Kazuki Iwanaga, Patricia Loreskär: Women legislators and their impact on public policy: a comparative perspective (S. 3); Claudia Derichs: Strategy, action, transition: women as agents of change (S. 25); Drude Dahlerup: The effect of electoral "gender quotas" - "quota women" in politics (S. 44); Manon Tremblay, Jackie F. Steele: The politics of quotas around the world: Asia in perspective (S. 56); Khalida Ghaus: Role of women in peace and conflict: suffering of Afghan women (S. 79); II. Dynasties' daughters or Asia's roaring tigresses?: Lourdes Veneracion-Rallonza: A spectacle of masculine and feminine images of political leadership: a feminist reflection on the current crisis of leadership in the Philippines (S. 99); Dagmar Hellmann-Rajanayagam: Durga Amma and St. Sonia, the redeemer - images of women politicians in India (S. 119); Andrea Fleschenberg: A leader-in-waiting - female political leadership in Burma (S. 138); III. Beyond numbers - from the grassroots towards top political power: Marion R. Müller: The private roots of public participation: women's engagement in democratic politics in Pakistan (S. 165); Shahnaz Wazir Ali: Women's representation in the politics of Pakistan (S. 187); Riffat Munnawar: Decentralization and women's participation in local governance (S. 193); Aazar Ayaz, Andrea Fleschenberg: Sharing personal experiences: women in Pakistani politics (S. 205)
