Beschreibung:
This paper discusses the causes, processes and consequences of feminised migration in the context of East and South East Asia's expanding global capitalism, increasing feminisation of the economic means for family survival, and rising civil activism both in local communities and transnationally. The author's analysis of labour migration takes an intra-regional, focusing primarily on the policies of destination countries and responses by grassroots forces there, as they decisively determine migrants' welfare and labour. The paper is structured in four parts: it provides a brief account of how rapid and uneven industrialisation has generated a regional division of labour, which has in turn led to intra-regional labour migration by large numbers of women; examines statistics of female migration from the 1970s to the present: their number, the sending and receiving countries, and employment; discusses migration policies, legal status and the occupational characteristics of migrant women in the various countries of destination; and finally, analyses the ways in which migrants and community-based organisations have responded to the restrictive policies of labour-importing governments.
